about

16:58 The threads of this composition were started in 1968 or 1969 and originally called "The God of Music". Oudist Dick Barsamian performs a beautiful Taksim/Taxim to begin the work. The melodic themes in 12/8 time were composed to emulate the conscience wavering movements of the invisible Soul one feels through the body in or after deep meditation; while listening, in trance, to the Alap of an Indian Classical Raga or during creative activity. The dumbek's 6/8 repeating trance rhythm (ostanoto, Italian term for ongoing rhythmic patterning in European classical music) was created by the composer from traditional Latin influences. Dedicated to the memory of legendary Jazz drummer and teacher Alan Dawson, who graciously played the first theme of "Soul Rule", in an ongoing fashion, on vibes while R. A. Fish played drumset, at one of R. A. Fish's private lessons with the great Meastro at the Berklee College of Music in 1969.
